Tournament Watcher: Ishiguro def. Doyon
The results of today's Tournament of Books are in, and now I'm two for two with my picks (not counting the gimme for the first match, because I knew those results when I filled out my bracket). Based on the very strong review that Georgie Lewis gives to Never Let Me Go, I now worry that Mark Sarvas will advance it into the third round, instead of eliminating it as I predicted. Time will tell.
Commentator/commissioner Guilfoile discloses a perceived conflict of interest, which he proceeds to minimize, and I have to agree with him. I take the side of the Transom, which in December declared that "The NYTBR should be devoted to passionate discussion about books led solely by people who care entirely way too much about books."
Previous TOB entry: Round 1, match 2
Update: I forgot to mention a small fact about the Steelers-Lions game that Guilfoile references. I was at that game, my friend. We never knew that something strange had happened until we saw highlights on TV after we left. Maybe we just had crappy seats. In fact, sports contest as metaphor for Tournament of Books holds nicely with this added element. My blog represents a pretty cheap seat from which to observe events in Portland, New York, or other professional playing fields of blogdom.
