Two mutations for ichthyosis vulgaris

Two significant mutations occur near the beginning of filaggrin's long exon 3The BBC today reports that researchers have found two mutations that cause ichthyosis vulgaris, which is a common hereditary condition associated with eczema. Here are three different ways to refer to the same paper:

The BBC quotes W. H. Irwin McLean, one of the authors: "It was a really tough project, but because we had experience in this type of gene, we managed to crack it where others had failed." The article doesn't say exactly what type of gene Dr. McLean means, but presumably he means really long and internally repetitive ones.
